At a time when blogging, twittering and emails are commonplace we want to celebrate an earlier form of mass communication - the picture postcard. In its heyday, hundreds of millions of cards were sent through the mails each year to become the universal form of personal communication in the days before telephones were commonplace.
These cards were illustrated with all manner of images, ranging from the mundane to the risqué, from the scenic to the domestic. We have chosen four types that we hope will encourage you to submit something to the Gallery on the Green.
Rather than send a traditional postcard why not be ambitious and make your own as we would be happy to receive your hand-made art-work, whether drawn, collaged, printed, stencilled, or written? Above all, enjoy yourself.
